Purpose
The earth is under massive stress due to current level of consumption which has crossed the sustaining capacity of our planet. Thus, the need of the hour is to promote sustainable production and consumption. The purpose of this study is to identify the basic barriers of sustainable consumer behaviour which are hindering the adoption of sustainable consumption.


Design/methodology/approach
This article is divided into two parts. The first part consists of a literature review based on 128 articles (1995 to 2020), which are spread over a period of 25 years. Based on the literature review, nine barriers of sustainable consumer behaviour were identified and put into three categories. In the second part, fuzzy analytical hierarchy process has been used to know about the relative weight of each barrier so that benchmarking/prioritising of basic barriers of sustainable consumer behaviour can be done.


Findings
This article identifies critical barriers affecting the acceptance of sustainable electronic products. High price, a perception of no environmental impact, no benefit in personal image, lesser use by family and friends, lack of awareness about the products etc. emerged as the potential barriers which need prime attention. The relative weight of each of these barriers has also been arrived at in this article which is expected to be beneficial for policymakers to focus upon important barriers. Impact of many of these barriers can be reduced through innovative approaches and solutions.


Research limitations/implications
This article will be helpful in future research in the field of sustainable consumer behaviour. Through the understanding of the barriers of sustainable consumer behaviour, companies, governments and industries can take suitable initiatives by modifying the policies and practices to reduce the impact of these barriers so that consumer behaviour can be made more sustainable.


Originality/value
The current article tries to identify the critical barriers to adoption of sustainable electronic products by the consumers. An extensive literature review, expert suggestions and consumer survey have been adopted to identify nine barriers. Although, multiple researches have been done in the field of sustainable consumer behaviour and adoption of sustainable electronic products, there is no research article which solely focuses on implementing Fuzzy analytical hierarchical process (AHP) approach to rank the barriers faced by consumers for adoption of sustainable electronic products. It has been concluded that high price of sustainable electronic products is the most critical barrier in adoption of sustainable consumer behaviour. Moreover, the relative ranking obtained with the help of Fuzzy AHP can be used by policymakers and organisations to promote and implement sustainability in consumer behaviour.

PurposeThe inclusion of sustainable practices in the service only supply chain (SOSC) is less evident in the literature. The aim of this research is to analyse the enablers of sustainability to be implemented in (SOSC).Design/methodology/approachA rigorous literature review and experts' outlook are used to identify fifteen key enablers of sustainability to be implemented in the SOSC. These key enablers are analysed by the interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and fuzzy decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) technique. A case study of an Indian hospital is taken for testing the relevancy of the research.FindingsISM identified the six hierarchical levels of the enablers and MICMAC classified the enablers into four categories based on the driving and dependence power of the enablers. The fuzzy DEMATEL technique categorized the enablers into cause and effect groups. Four enablers were found in the effect group and eleven enablers were identified in the cause group.Practical implicationsThis research will help the managers in identifying the enablers of sustainability to implement in the SOSC and to handle the critical enablers with care.Originality/valueThis is the first of its kind of study which not only identifies the key enablers to achieve sustainability in the SOSC but also derives the hierarchy levels of enablers and categorizes these enablers into cause and effect groups.

The present study identifies and prioritizes the barriers pertaining to implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies in Indian service industries. The 10 most important barriers related to CSR implementation have been first identified and then evaluated for the ranking process using Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) based methodology. The outcome of the study clearly presents that lack of top management commitment, lack of significant benefit of CSR, and financial constraints are the most important barriers in effective implementation of sustainable CSR initiatives among organizations belonging to the Indian service industry. These results may be used by decision makers to understand and these barriers, and identify critical success factors for the CSR process, which will help them to ensure that CSR is effectively implemented in their respective organizations.

AbstractPersonal communication devices have made their way into each and every household. The complex nature of e‐waste, and its generation at an amplified pace calls for serious attention of policy makers, managers, educators and researchers. The paper presents a structured literature review of peer‐reviewed journal publications in the research area of disposal behavior of consumers with respect to their personal electronics. Also, it discusses the concepts and theoretical underpinnings to understand consumer disposal behavior based on extensive literature review. These theoretical foundations further help in framing the hypothesis and proposing the conceptual model. The proposed model is based on Theory of Planned Behavior. It studies the relationship between the core constructs: attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control, and includes awareness of consequences derived from the Value‐Belief‐Norm Theory. The model will also prove useful in understanding the impact of environmentally responsible disposal intention of personal electronics and its relationship with actual behavior. The role of external influences in the form of moderators is also taken into consideration while developing the model. It is expected that the research will help provide useful insights to literature on environmentally responsible disposal.

The purpose of this article is to engage student community to celebrate Green Diwali. The present study makes use of various engaging activities to generate awareness about the celebrating Diwali in unsustainable manner. The effectiveness of the activities was also measured through a questionnaire-based survey. The article provides an excellent example of educating and promoting sustainable development through celebration of Green Diwali. This study will encourage other institutions in the country to promoting sustainable development activities and take the initiatives like that of Green Diwali.

AbstractThe way consumers behave is fundamental to marketing. Journal of Consumer Behaviour (JCB) is an international journal dedicated to publishing the latest developments of consumer behaviour. To gain an understanding of the evolution and trends in consumer behaviour, this study presents a retrospective review of JCB using bibliometric analysis. Using bibliographic records of JCB from Scopus, this study finds that consumer behaviour research in JCB has grown substantially in terms of collaboration (co‐authorships), global reach (countries), productivity (publications), and impact (citations). The major themes explored by consumer behaviour research in JCB include consumer information processing, consumption communities, consumption value, sustainable consumption, intergenerational consumer behaviour, consumer‐brand relationship, consumer ethics, and conditional relationships in consumer behaviour. The most recent consumer behaviour research in JCB has considered externalities such as the COVID‐19 pandemic and focused on themes such as consumer ethics and sustainable consumption in line with the global movement toward environmental social governance (ESG) and sustainable development goals (SDGs).
